George Camsell joined Middlesbrough from Durham City in October 1925 for £500, having scored 20 goals in 21 league games. Before his career as a footballer, he was a miner.

In his first season at Middlesbrough, he made only 4 appearances for the club, scoring 3 goals. The following season, he scored a record-breaking 59 goals in just 37 appearances, which helped Middlesbrough achieve promotion to the First Division. (His goalscoring record will be told in further detail later.) He spent the rest of his career at Middlesbrough, playing 453 times for the club and scoring 345 goals, including 24 hat-tricks.

He had a successful (albeit fairly brief) spell in international football. He played 9 times for England, scoring in every single one of his appearances. In total, he scored 18 goals. His England records means his goals-per-game ratio was 2.00 – higher than any other player who played more than once.

After he retired from playing football, World War II struck, during which he worked in factories in Teesside. Once the war was over, he returned to Middlesbrough as a scout – his biggest discovery was a young Brian Clough. He eventually became a coach and an assistant secretary.

He retired from football altogether in 1963 and died three years later at the age of 63.
